DESCRIPTION:The Museum of South Texas History presents “The Shooting Star of Starr County: An Out of this World Discovery” exhibit\, opening in the 1910 Jail Cell Block Gallery Friday\, Sept. 20.  \nOn Feb. 15\, 2023\, meteorites landed on a ranch near the town of El Sauz in Starr County\, Texas. The meteorites found on the ranch were documented and collected by expert and amateur meteorite hunters. The exhibit will highlight a two-fold story: how meteors fell through the sky across Europe and the United States before crash landing on a ranch in South Texas and the history of space rocks. Several meteorite pieces found on the ranch property will be featured behind state-of-the-art cases with a 360-view.    \n“The Shooting Star of Starr County: An Out of this World Discovery” exhibit is made possible in part by a grant from The Betty C. Kelso Foundation. It opens Friday\, Sept. 20\, and closes August 2025.   \nThis exhibit is included in the regular museum admission fees. DESCRIPTION:The South Texas International Film Festival (STXIFF) is excited to launch its 2024 48-Hour Film Race\, beginning on Friday\, August 30 at 6 p.m. Filmmakers from Hidalgo\, Starr\, Willacy\, and Cameron Counties are invited to compete in this high-energy event\, which challenges participants to create a short film within a 48-hour window. \n  \nThe competition kicks off at the Edinburg Municipal Auditorium. Participants will be given three unique elements—a required object\, a concept\, and a filmmaking technique—that must be incorporated into their films. Registration is open from August 15 to August 27\, with a $25 fee per team payable at the Kickoff event. Late registration will be available on-site on September 8\, but spaces are limited. \n  \nCompleted films and required documentation must be uploaded by 7 p.m. on Sunday\, September 1st. Submissions should be sent via a cloud-based storage link to stxiff@edinburglibrary.us\, with a confirmation screenshot texted to 956-330-7542. \n  \nAll films that meet the deadline will be screened during the 10th Annual STXlFF. Filmmakers are asked to refrain from making their films publicly available online until after the winners are announced. The awards ceremony will recognize top films\, including the “Best 48 Hour Film” and the “Edinburg Film Friendly Award” for films shot in Edinburg. Additional awards and recognitions may also be presented. \n  \nFilms must be under three minutes\, including credits\, and must be produced within the 48-hour timeframe. Participants must reside in the eligible counties\, and all materials used must be properly licensed.
